Another Stunning Example of Craftsmanship

I had the opportunity to attend last week’s open house for our latest home project that engaged the hands and minds of at least 60 students.  Each year through property owned by the FVTC Foundation, students build a home with partial proceeds from its sale used to support related student projects. While primarily built by students in our Residential Building Construction program, other programs involved included Electricity, Wood Manufacturing Technology, Horticulture and Interior Design.

There is tremendous demand for skilled workers in the construction industry right now, so these students will have remarkable opportunities. Kudos to all involved in building such a quality, beautiful home in north Appleton

Another “Skills Gap” Strategy for Employers

A few years back a number of employers independently (and somewhat coincidentally) reached out to FVTC to assist with addressing their need to find skilled industrial maintenance employees. Even though we were graduating a significant number of manufacturing students, there were simply not enough to fill all the open positions in the region.

One Way Employers Can Increase Their Candidate Pools

Every conversation I have with employers focuses on the concern about worker shortages and the difficulty they have in finding individuals with the skills needed to fill their open positions. The most recent economic survey conducted by Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC) indicates that 80% of employers are having trouble finding workers. Given Wisconsin’s demographics, this problem will, no doubt, only continue to worsen in the years ahead.
