Happy Holidays!

As we bring our centennial year to a close here at Fox Valley Technical College and enter the holiday season, thank you for supporting our mission and all the best to you for a bright new year in 2013.  The year 2012 was incredible on so many levels and has really served as a springboard for new ways to serve our students, employers and communities as we begin our next century of service to this region.  Thanks for following my blog over the past year.  Happy Holidays!

Today was a very special day as we conducted our final celebration of the College’s centennial for the year 2012.  Staff member Trent Schloss designed, and Industrial Welding Technology Student, Kyle Prellwitz, fabricated an incredible stainless steel time capsule that was filled and sealed within the atrium wall of the new Jones Dairy Farm Culinary Theatre.  Since the theatre was built during our centennial year, it seemed most fitting to locate the time capsule in that facility.  Both Trent and Kyle were on hand to actually seal the capsule and place it in its permanent location—and both were beaming with pride in their wonderful workmanship.

We included a number of items in the time capsule…photos dating all the way back to the early 1900s, college publications from 2012, information on the capital referendum and centennial celebration, some student projects, and much more.  I was pleased to include a letter to the future generations that talked a bit about these times and what we hoped and imagined for them in the future.

The plaque on the outside of the building that identifies this time capsule’s location is very specific in its direction that it not be opened until the celebration of Fox Valley Technical College’s bicentennial in the year 2112…one hundred years from today.  Wow, think about that.  Who will open this capsule, what will be happening at that time, what kinds of challenges will the college’s leaders of that era be facing?  I think many of our staff in attendance at this brief event today were thinking about how future generations would react and what an interesting gift of history this time capsule represents.

I know this event meant a lot to those who played a very direct role in the planning and preparation of the time capsule and its contents.  And it seemed to mean a great deal to everyone who attended to witness such an historic moment in time for our organization.
